That’s a question we often hear when introducing visitors to one of the most popular features in our memory care neighborhood at Havenwood of Burnsville in Minnesota—the Tovertafel.
What Is a Tovertafel?
Tovertafel, which means “Magic Table” in Dutch, is an award-winning interactive game system designed specifically for older adults living with cognitive challenges such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Developed by Hester Le Riche during her Ph.D. research at the Delft University of Technology, the Tovertafel is more than just a game—it’s a powerful tool for engagement, stimulation, and connection.
Using a high-quality ceiling-mounted projector, the Tovertafel displays interactive images onto a tabletop surface. These animations respond to hand and arm movements, allowing players to engage in fun, simple activities that encourage physical movement, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction—all without complicated controls or confusing rules.

For families visiting loved ones who may struggle with verbal communication, the Tovertafel offers a meaningful way to reconnect.
